Founder and Chairman of the Pakistan Rights Movement. A former Senator of Pakistan, physicist, human-rights campaigner, and a leading voice for Palestine.
Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan is the founder and Chairman of the Pakistan Rights Movement (PRM), launched on 10 January 2026 as an independent platform for constitutional rights, civilian supremacy, and principled reform.
Born on 3 March 1974 in the village of Sheikh Jana in Swabi District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he completed his early schooling in Swabi and earned a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Peshawar. A student organizer from an early age, he rose through the ranks of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, serving as its provincial head in 1997, central general secretary in 1999, and central president in 2002.
He went on to lead Jamaat-e-Islami in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and served a full six-year term in the Senate of Pakistan, from March 2018 to March 2024, representing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In the Senate he was recognized as one of the chamber's most active members, sitting on committees covering devolution, defence, and education.
In September 2025, Mushtaq Ahmad Khan resigned from Jamaat-e-Islami to build an independent political platform focused on human rights, democratic governance, and constitutionalism. That decision led, a few months later, to the founding of the Pakistan Rights Movement.
He is widely known for his human-rights advocacy and his solidarity with the people of Palestine. In May 2024 he led pro-Palestine demonstrations at D-Chowk in Islamabad. In September 2025 he joined the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid toward Gaza; he was detained by Israeli forces on 2 October 2025, roughly 70 nautical miles off the Gaza coast, and released on 7 October 2025. He has also authored a 2025 book on Pakistan and the Muslim world, addressing Palestine, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and the case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
